The Talent Talk: Salary Negotiation

Make sure you understand your market value

I have received a lot of feedback from everyone, and I want to thank you all. To the 750 subscribers, I will continue to provide feedback and insights to assist you in any way I can.

This topic is frequently raised, and it's the most difficult conversation you can have during your job search or interview process. However, I have put together a guide to ensure that you are receiving your worth.

1. Research your market value

Before going into any negotiations, it's essential to understand your worth in the market. Research job titles, requirements, and salaries through online platforms like Glassdoor or PayScale. Knowing what similar positions pay in your area will help you set realistic salary expectations.

2. Know your worth

Consider your experience, skills, education, and any other relevant factors that make you an excellent candidate for the position. Understand how your skills and experience fit into the company's needs, and how they add value to the role.

3. Wait until the job offer

Don't bring up salary negotiations until the employer brings up a job offer. You want to ensure that the employer is interested in you and believes you're a good fit for the job before starting the negotiation process. If done to early, it can potentially discount you from the role. However, you need to make sure the position aligns with your salary expectations.

4. Be prepared to discuss salary

Once the employer brings up the job offer, they will likely mention salary. If they don't bring it up, you can ask them about it. Make sure you're prepared to discuss.

5. Don't be the first to name a number

If the employer asks you what salary you're looking for, try to avoid naming the first number. Instead, ask them to provide you with their salary range or offer first.

6. Be confident and professional

During the negotiation process, it's important to maintain a confident and professional. Stay positive and focused on your value as a candidate.

7. Consider benefits and perks

If the employer can't meet your desired salary, consider negotiating for additional benefits or perks like more vacation days, a flexible work schedule, or a signing bonus.

8. Don't rush the process

Negotiations can take time, and it's essential to take your time to ensure that you're getting a fair deal. Be patient and don't rush the process.
